I'm posting some great photos of a client who had her hair permed by me in the summer of 2011(or we can call it a body wave, as well). These photos represent different styles she was able to achieve post-perm about 1 month afterwards and a great sexy beach blow out I was able to achieve 6 months after the initial perm/body wave service was performed. Just some quick notes about about the perm...we used larger rods on the top of her hair for a focus on volume (not curl) and used smaller rods on the sides and bottom to achieve curl and wave. Her " baseline" or natural hair is as straight as a board and she was extremely frustrated about her lack of options. Solution...a perm, of course :) ~ Sovay Reeder @ Salon Sovay

Always a good time for a lash perm and tint...even in the chilly months!

Well, as I have mentioned before, I have never seen such a surge in lash perm and tint requests during the colder months as this is such a popular service, traditionally, in the warm summer months. I can only conclude that "pretty" is always in fashion and demand...even in the chilly months in Austin, Texas. Here's a recent lash perm and tint on a new client who had received lash tints previously at other area salons but had never tried to eyelash perm service before. Needless to say, she was very pleased...and you can see why. I've said this before and I'll say it again, this is the most underrated facial beauty enhancement you can get that is not invasive and requires zero maintenance on a daily basis.

Typically May/June/July/August is the "season" for lash perms/tints but, for some reason, January is full of lash perms this year, 2012.

The reason lash perming is so popular in the hotter months is simple...there is nothing better than beautiful, curled, dark and thick lashes without any makeup at the beach and pool. A lash perm and tint can accomplish this. I'm not sure why I have had so many requests this month but I think it's great and love passing on before and after pictures for your viewing pleasure.

Pretty Perm/Body Wave in Austin, Texas

With this client, we really wanted to be careful about the amount of wave to put in her hair. I definitely wanted to err on the side of conservative as opposed to "Shirley Temple" curly. There was a simple reason for this. This was my suggestion and advice for her...not the other way around. I always come up with radical suggestions for my clients and, subsequently, freak out a little bit when they say, "Ok...let's do it!" Well, this was the case here so I really wanted to make sure my suggestion came out perfect and conservative. If it hadn't, I don't know how I could have forgiven myself. We both survived the outcome and welcomed this victory. I have received a lot of phone calls regarding perm services. It seems there are not too many stylists here in Austin specializing in body waves and/or perm services. Well, I think that's unfortunate because perms can be beautiful. I think the word, "perm", has negative implications, thus, hurting the perceived visual result. People envision this horrible 1980's frizzy mistake. Truth is...perms rock. You have to know how to use different rod sizes in order to manipulate the end result. Many people prefer the word, "body wave", and that's ok with me. But, just between you and me, there is no difference between the two words...just a difference in rod size. ~Sovay Reeder, Salon Sovay

Pretty long layered haircut - before and after

So I specialize in long hair. I cut long hair, style long hair, perm long hair, smooth (Keratin treatment) long hair, and color long hair. This is a client of mine who prefers wearing her pretty hair long. We've gone shoulder length one time but weren't crazy about that look for her. One of the common problems with long hair, quite frankly, is that it gets boring. It's pretty and a bit boring, unfortunately. When I cut Julie's hair this time, we didn't want to take any length off because we want to encourage the length and growth but we wanted to put some more layers in it and jazz it up. Quite often, the top portion of the hair will look dull and flat and you have to go in there and spruce things up a bit with layers without giving it that dreaded "shelf" layering look or something too choppy. We also added some side fringe (also referred to as long bangs) per her request. I went really gentle on the "fringe" because I feared she might change her mind and not want them after I cut them. So I cut these to grow out well should she suffer from "bang commitment phobia". I always inform people what a commitment fringe and bangs are before we go there.

This before and after is a good example of putting the sexy back in a long hair style without compromising length. Her "before" picture was taken on 12/28/11 and the "after" picture was taken on 12/29/11. You should notice the length looking the same but way more volume in the layering to keep Julie happy and excited about her long hair :) - Sovay Reeder @ Salon Sovay

"Bronde"...blonde and brown, that is

The new blonde is bronde...a mixture of both blonde and brown shades in hair. I have a lot of clients who have come in the last 6 months requesting darker shades of their traditional blonde highlights. Variations of this look are often referred to as "ombre". Ombre is French for shade or shadow.

Here is a client who requested more dimension in her hair color and shades of brown woven into the hair...very similar to the way hair highlights say, for example, if you surfed for a living and had salt and sun naturally highlighting your hair.

Red/Ginger Hair Color

Here is a photo of a great red/ginger hair color. This client is actually a natural blonde and we alter her hair color using a variety of red, blonde, and warm colors. This client has made me think seriously about going red...I just love this hair color. She looks amazing.

Highlights in Austin

Here is a client of mine who has made quite a color transformation. I believe this was our first meeting with one another. She wanted to go from her natural light brown to a beautiful blonde. I lifted her overall base color and put in varying shades of blonde and brown giving her depth and dimension. Years later we took her from brown to red and then platinum blonde for a Texas Pageant Competition. -Sovay

p.s. We also did a long layered cut keeping it somewhat low maintenance since she was a student at the time and wanted a ponytail friendly cut.

Eyelash Perm and Tint

Here is another clients before and after photos (it's my sister, actually). I am a huge fan of the lash tint. This is just another example of what a difference it makes in a woman's face (and men for that matter but application is a bit different for them...should leave tips of their lashes "untinted" for a very natural look). Now on this before and after, I did give her lashes a big boost with a lash perm and topped it off with a lash tint for the final home run. Love eyes and lashes. Perm in Austin

I'm a huge fan of perms. It seems no one knows they are still around and available (so yesterday) but I really love them. I have seen drastic changes in a person's appearance after adding some bend and body to the hair that frames their face. I recently did a couple of perms in the last two weeks and was able to receive "after" shots from one of my clients (see photo/red hair). I am also posting a "during" shot of the other client just to give you guys a look at this tedious but rewarding process taking place. - Sovay Reeder

Eyelash Tint

I'm a huge advocate for eyelash tinting. I absolutely love it for these reasons: requires no maintenance, frames the eyes and makes them appear bigger and brighter, it's inexpensive relative to the incredible aesthetic return. Best Corrective Color

I searched and searched for photos of clients and went all the way back to 2005/2006 when I was going to Paul Mitchell Academy for cosmotology school and this particular client actually changed my career path. At the time, I was only interested in obtaining my license to do volunteer work on weekends (women at shelters). This client had received highlights with another student and it was the client's birthday and the color came out a bit orange. We colorists like to call it "warm"...sounds better. Anyway, the client looked so sad and had huge tears coming down her face. I saw her out of my peripheral vision but didn't want her to know that I noticed her hair...didn't want her to feel awkward, etc. Anyway, she kept crying and I finally walked up to her and told her I would "enhance the color a bit" for her birthday. She came in the following morning and we squeezed her in before my 9am client and she was so happy after we finished. I finally felt like I was making a difference...just a small difference...in someone's life. Selling pharmaceuticals (my career and full time job at the time) was financially rewarding but I never really felt like I made that much difference...I never got to see someone smile so bright like that. Anyway, fast forward to present...I decided I would do color and cuts full time instead of just volunteering my hair efforts. This client changed my career path. We still keep in touch. She works for the licensing board overseeing cosmotologists...whewww...thank goodness she liked my work.
